There are a variety of ways to heat your caravan, and every owner will have their own opinion on which option they think is best. Some caravanners prefer an air conditioner with reverse cycle functionality, while others use a gas heater or even compact electric bar heaters for warmth in winter months.
While all of these options will warm your caravan, there are a few reasons why these may not be the ideal way to heat your caravan while you’re away, depending on how you travel.
On top of cooling your caravan in summer, reverse cycle air conditioners have a heating function that can warm you up during the winter months. They are however power hungry, so you’ll need a mains power connection to use it, which works for caravanners who like to stay at caravan parks.
If you want off-grid heating you would need an inverter with some serious battery and solar power to use reverse cycle heating, which isn’t the most efficient option.
Most caravans, camper trailers, and motorhomes come equipped with gas connections, and caravanners usually take at least one gas bottle with them for cooking, so using a gas heater can be a convenient option.
The biggest drawback to gas heaters is that if you do run out of gas you may be unable to cook, heat your caravan, or use any other appliances that require gas. It’s also not always easy to top up your gas when you’re on the road.
Caravan diesel heaters have been around for a long time and are an extremely safe and efficient way to keep your caravan warm.
Diesel heaters can be installed in almost any caravan or RV and don’t require mains power to heat up the space around them, making them perfect for those cold nights when you’re free camping, or those days when you want to relax in your caravan without worrying about the temperature.
Using an intake vent, a caravan diesel heater pulls cold air into a heat exchanger and when the diesel combusts it warms the air up. A fan then circulates the warm air around your caravan through a ducted system.
This is then repeated over and over again until you’re nice and toasty!
Diesel heaters are extremely safe heaters for caravans for a number of reasons.
Diesel is hard to set alight, so even if there was a leak there’s virtually no risk of a fire. Also, if your diesel did leak via its fuel line it would just trickle onto the road or earth underneath your RV.
There is also no possibility for carbon monoxide to escape when using a diesel heater as the combustion happens in an enclosed combustion chamber and the fumes are securely ventilated out of any enclosed spaces.
The ideal place to install your diesel heater will vary depending on the floor plan of your RV. The more common places are under the seating area or the bed. Diesel heaters are always installed on the ground because warm air rises, and cold air needs to be drawn into the diesel heater for it to work. This also keeps everything neat and hidden from view.
The diesel heater itself doesn’t take up a lot of room but additional room is required for the ducts that carry the heat around the caravan and the air intake pipe.
Caravan diesel heater installation is not difficult, with the right equipment and know-how. If you are considering a do-it-yourself approach, which we do not recommend, there are several factors to keep in mind.
Incorrectly installing a diesel heater could void the warranty of your caravan and heater, may cause issues with its heating capacity, and affect your trade-in value when the time comes. Other common problems with self-installed diesel heaters are potent fuel smells and incorrect voltage.
It’s always best to have your diesel heater installed by the experts who have done it time and time again, like us. We’ll give you the peace of mind that your diesel heater installation will go smoothly and that no warranty issues are created.
Diesel heaters are extremely efficient and perfectly safe, so you can run them all night long. Some of the latest diesel heaters, like these ones from Eberspacher, even offer functionality like altitude sensors, a range of heating options, and timers.
They also use automated temperature control to balance the heating and fan speeds, leaving you in the goldilocks zone of never being too hot or cold. It’s never been easier to create the perfect temperature for a great night’s sleep, all night long.
Diesel heaters are not totally silent. Despite a lot of progress over the years they still make a little noise when they’re warming up. When the set temperature has been reached the sound level is quite subtle and is only due to the air intake and exhaust pipe. This does also cause a slight amount of noise outside your RV, but it shouldn’t be enough to bother anyone.
The clicking noise from the fuel pump once annoyed many diesel heater owners. Thankfully, brands like Eberspacher have solved the fuel pump problem by redesigning the blower nozzles and fans to provide silent operation.
Diesel heaters are extremely efficient when it comes to fuel consumption. In the right conditions, some will keep you warm overnight for under a litre of diesel. Plus, the benefits of having an external diesel fuel tank are that it is easy to check your current fuel level, and on the odd occasion you do need to top up your diesel heater fuel tank, you can get diesel from a service station pretty much anywhere.
Since a diesel heater runs mostly off diesel fuel, they use very little electricity and only require it to drive the fans and intake. The power consumption varies between models, but most use 8-10 amps on start-up before dropping down to 1-2 amps over longer periods of time once the heater has warmed up.
There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to buying a heater for your caravan. As with any purchase, it all comes down to personal preference, what you need, and how much you can afford.
If you’ve decided you need a heating system installed in your caravan, even if you aren’t sure if a gas heater or diesel heater would be best for you, talk to us.
